Anti-War

The elite doves are the people who are the anti-war activists, and the hard hats are the polar opposite. In the article, it talks about how President Nixon was getting backlash from both groups. The article says the hard hats said Nixon was a Democrat that might be peeled from the party. While Nixon was getting backlash for not pulling the US army out of the war immediately. George Wallace on the other hand used the elite doves to gain his votes for the election and tried swaying the hard hats over. The hard hats were mainly full of white working-class men. In the article it states a quote from a hard hat saying that a black man shouldn’t equal a working-class white men. Most of the hard hats were from the south so they got the stereotype of being a redneck racist. I don’t think the Democratic Party could have stopped the political realignment because if they did exact what their party wanted they would have got heavy backlash from the hard hats and if they did everything the hard hats wanted they would have had backlash from the elite doves. Everyone was so far left and so far right it was going to happen either way.

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post and I thought you summarized it very well and brought up some key points. I liked how you brought up how there became a strong stereotype for the hard hats as that was something that I noticed as well. I thought you brought up an interesting point about how the Democratic Party could not have stopped the party realignment and I agree with your point. I can see how it would have been a tough situation because it seemed as though the country was so divided into the far left and the far right.
