This course engages with a simple, yet critical, question in United States history: How did ordinary people gain power and use it to win rights we enjoy today? While this course is a broad interpretive survey of the events, ideas, and personalities which have shaped the United States since 1877, it does so by centering on four social movements: Labor Movement, Civil Rights Movement, Feminist Movement, and Environmental Movement. Each case study will focus on the movement’s goals, tactics, wins, concessions, and shortcomings as a window into modern American history.
