The Lavender Scare is a case when “… thousands of suspected homosexual were investigated, and dismissed by government officials and private employers.” (Friedman) It’s related to the red scare because they happened at the same time and the impact or the way they were executed was similar to one another. In the article it stated that communists and homophobia possess similar characteristics. It also revealed that anything that is seen as any form of disloyalty can be used against a person in this McCarthy being the center of everything as someone that accused many for being a communist and someone that was taken by the system he created. And what I found to be similar is that communism and homophobia can be used as a political weapon. The way Pearson started to discredit McCarthy and the ripples it caused toward the smearing of mcCarthy even tho Pearson went dark for awhile “ He muted his criticism of McCarthy… even sexual gossip about him” (Friedman” shows what the impact of a person a person identity and personality have on themselves as it can be used as a weapon against them.
I believe that sexual innuendos still exist but at much lower rate than the lavender scare time. The reason I believe is because of how LGBTQ community is seen as of right now. Even they are accepted to certain extent but there’s still a division and I believe that it can be used as a weapon in politics because there is a certain part of the population that doesn’t accept the LGBTQ community.
I somewhat agree with sexual innuendos in politics, but I also think they use LGBTQ to gain more popularity within their party. I think it is about the same amount of use now because most of the time with politics something with LGBTQ is mentioned. Everyone is so far left and right nowadays that something with LGBTQ is mentioned.
